Fordite — also called Detroit Agate — is a rare material made from layers of car paint that built up inside Detroit auto factories from the 1960s onward. As cars were spray-painted and then baked in curing ovens, excess paint on the racks and walls was baked along with them. Over years, these dried and repeatedly heat-hardened layers formed solid, stone-like slabs. When polished, these industrial “paint stones” reveal vibrant, one-of-a-kind patterns created entirely by chance.
